Rubén Darío Gómez (b.1973)

Rubén Darío Gómez was born in 1973 in Zapatoca, Santander, a state located in the north-central subregion of the country. He earned the Bachelor of Music from the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) where he played in the university’s wind band and later conducted it for two years. He has an active career as composer, music producer, and arranger for several popular music groups. Among them are Grupo Rh Positivo, Rubén y David, Aguafresca, Septófono, Banda de Vientos de la Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga (UNAB), and Bandas Infantil y Juvenil Mochila Cantora.

As a conductor and pianist, Gómez has been honored with his groups Aguafresca and Septófono at music festivals such as Mono Núñez, Hatoviejo Cotrafa, Festival del Pasillo in Aguadas, Festival del Bambuco Luis Carlos González, and Concurso José A. Morales in Socorro.

As a composer, his compositions and arrangements have received awards and wide recognition at the most prominent Colombian band music festivals, as well as internationally. Gómez completed a D.M.A. in Wind Conducting and Composition at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is currently the Director of Bands at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Description

Ruben Dario Gomez wrote Chirimía in 2016 for a composer’s concert at Middle Tennessee State University, where he recently finished a Master’s degree in wind conducting. Chirimía is written for Oboe, Bass Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Bassoon, and Marimba, and it is a commentary on the different folk rhythms from the Pacific coast of Colombia, which are characterized by strong influences from African culture.
