Dr. Sebastian Serrano-Ayala Appointed as Visiting Assistant Professor of Orchestral Studies at the University of New Mexico

Seattle, WA – 6/18/24 – Dr. Sebastian Serrano-Ayala is excited to announce his appointment as the new Visiting Assistant Professor of Orchestral Studies at the University of New Mexico (UNM). This role marks a significant milestone in Dr. Serrano-Ayala’s career and reflects his dedication to advancing orchestral music education. At UNM, Dr. Serrano-Ayala will conduct the university's orchestra, mentor conducting students, and contribute to the vibrant cultural and educational environment.

Dr. Serrano-Ayala comes to this position after maintaining a very active schedule as an assistant conductor and guest conductor of orchestras in the state of Washington. This summer, he is anticipated to participate in the prestigious National Orchestral Institute in Washington D.C., and the Cabrillo Contemporary Music Festival in Santa Cruz, California.

About Dr. Sebastian Serrano-Ayala:

An advocate for the music of our time, Colombian-born conductor Sebastian Serrano-Ayala blends inclusive collaboration, and effortless conducting technique with fresh and timely musical interpretations. Currently serving as Assistant Conductor with Skagit Symphony and Saratoga Orchestra, he has been a Conducting Fellow at the Allentown Symphony Orchestra, Mostly Modern Festival and the American Modern Ensemble.

Recent engagements have included Yakima Symphony, Whatcom Wind Ensemble, and the SJMEA Honor Orchestra. Past highlights include working with Symphony Tacoma, Royal Military Chapel "Johan Willem Friso'' and The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own”.

Sebastian was a semi-finalist at the prestigious World Music Contest (WMC) - Conductor’s Competition conducting the Marinierskapel der Koninklijke Marine, the Blazerensemble Helicon, and the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Air Force. He was also a finalist at the 2021 International Conducting Competition hosted by Denver Philharmonic.

Serrano-Ayala holds a DMA in Wind - Orchestral Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), a MM in Conducting from Andrews University, and music education degrees from the Adventist University of Colombia (UNAC) and the Adventist University of the Philippines (AUP).
